Windshield Replacement and Repair:
Windshield Replacement
JN Phillips Glass technicians perform
thousands of safe auto glass replacements every year. In most cases, it’s the windshield
that’s damaged but we also replace a lot of tempered side windows, rear windows
and sunroofs. Our company uses only factory-authorized glass from industry-approved
sources.
Basic Replacement Process For
a Damaged Windshield
- Protective measures are taken to protect the vehicles' interior and hood, then the
wipers, moulding and cowl are carefully removed.
- The broken windshield is completely removed. Depending on the vehicle's condition,
the existing adhesive is then removed
- The pinchweld, where the windshield attaches to your vehicle, is inspected for any
bare metal or paint and is primed to insure adherence of adhesive.
- The urethane adhesive is then applied to the vehicle frame.
- The new windshield is firmly set in place and the cowl, moulding and wipers are
reattached.
- Your professional auto glass installer will inform you when your vehicle is safe
to drive after the completion of the replacement.
It is important to know that in today’s
automobiles, the auto glass in your car is a structural component of your vehicle.
Auto manufacturers have looked to glass to improve overall aesthetics and design
while maintaining the highest level of safety. Auto glass today is often integral
to the operation of your airbag deployment system. In order for your airbags to
operate effectively, your windshield must remain in place if your airbag deploys.
Windshield Repair
If your windshield damage is smaller than a dollar
bill, you may want to consider repairing the damage instead of replacing the entire
windshield. In most cases, your insurance will pay for windshield repair and waive
your deductible. Windshield repairs are less expensive and take less time than full
windshield replacements, often less than 30 minutes. Below are some examples of
repairable damage to a windshield:

In cases of minor damage to your windshield, a windshield
repair - instead of a full replacement - can often restore the integrity of the
glass. The technician injects a resin-based bonding agent into the damaged area.
This stops the windshield from cracking further and eliminates the risk of the damage
spreading. Once a repair is complete, the driver's view is no longer impaired by
the damage. If you look closely there may be some residual scarring where the glass
was filled with the bonding agent.
Safety will never be compromised for cost and convenience,
so if there is any question whether a windshield should be repaired or replaced,
both the insurance company and JN Phillips will insist on replacement. However,
when a windshield can be repaired, you'll save money and you can drive the car almost
right away.
Windshield repair is also eco-friendly as the glass is
not removed and therefore does not end up in a landfill. If you are looking for
a “green” option for your windshield damage, repair is a great alternative to replacement.
